Street meet
December 17th, 2006 by Daithí | Filed under Lost and Found.Debate over what you can sell (food-wise) from a street cart in Toronto. Always wondered about this one. Turns out that if it’s a thing on wheels (i.e. a van converted into a kitchen), you’re OK, but if it’s a stall, you’re pretty much limited to hotdogs and related products (Toronto stalls have a stock offering of Polish/Italian/German sausages, varying levels of spice/heat). One of the people interviewed in this article had a stall across the road from where I lived this summer. And I can vouch for the spicyness of the sausages. On the other hand, the chipshops-on-wheels were great value, and it was a sad day when roadworks displaced one of them.
There’s an obsessively good review of cheap and not-so-cheap eats around the UofT that’s also of interest (prepared by good people at Massey College), and even includes some of the on-wheels brigade. A bit out of date, but useful.
