NQAI announces higher education conference for January 2007
December 17th, 2006
The National Qualifications Authority of Ireland has announced details of a conference on “Accreditation and Assessment in Irish Higher Education – The Emerging Scenario”. Quite a mouthful of a title! Basically it’s primarily a conference on the Bologna Process, although (probably for the sake of the domestic audience) the blurb talks about the National Framework of Qualifications and the linked Bologna agenda (!). The workshops, in particular (see the full schedule (PDF) for more) cover everything from the recognition of prior learning to external accreditation.
The venue is the lovely National University of Ireland, Maynooth. Taking place on the afternoon of Thursday 25th January and the morning of the 26th.
Article 19 on Net censorship in Iran
December 17th, 2006
Freedom of expression campaign group Article 19 has launched a website and campaign entitled The Persian Impediment to highlight the systematic censorship and regulatory activities of the Iranian government and its associated institutions. The site includes detailed descriptions of individual and system-level incidents, as well as a currently-bare-bones blog that promises to deal with ongoing questions and issues as they arise.
Street meet

Debate over what you can sell (food-wise) from a street cart in Toronto. Always wondered about this one. Turns out that if it’s a thing on wheels (i.e. a van converted into a kitchen), you’re OK, but if it’s a stall, you’re pretty much limited to hotdogs and related products (Toronto stalls have a stock offering of Polish/Italian/German sausages, varying levels of spice/heat). One of the people interviewed in this article had a stall across the road from where I lived this summer. And I can vouch for the spicyness of the sausages. On the other hand, the chipshops-on-wheels were great value, and it was a sad day when roadworks displaced one of them.
There’s an obsessively good review of cheap and not-so-cheap eats around the UofT that’s also of interest (prepared by good people at Massey College), and even includes some of the on-wheels brigade. A bit out of date, but useful.
