I think the childish glee at the typo is more than a little unfair. Yes, typos annoy me too, almost as much as ambient apostrophes, but the most egregious ones are the ones that aren’t spotted and corrected. This one was. Moreover, as an avid consumer of various 24-hour news outlets (online, rolling tv news, radio, etc) I am happy to see RTE get the news out quickly. Of course, if this were a regular occurence, my view would be different. But as an infrequent mistake, rapidly corrected, I think that it is a small price to pay for up to the minute news. Hunestly.
Unfair but irresistable, especially in the light of what I believe is a drop in standards at rte.ie in recent weeks - tabloid-style headlines, sloppy journalism, etc. (See here, here)
Hueston? We have a problem!
(Wish I’d thought of that earlier; it only occurred to me as I was listening to a radio story about the Space Shuttle yesterday).
For what it’s worth, I agree with you and Cian about the unwelcome tabloidisation of rte.ie, but don’t allow well-placed anger in this regard to be misdirected: I think that “Hueston” is more to do with the imperatives of speed than of sensationalism. Now, if the headline had been ‘Gothca!’, then you would have had both points.
